Social media can be detrimental to your divorce

On Behalf of Rodriguez Law Firm, Inc. | Jul 31, 2024 | Divorce

Engaging on social media platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) could lead to legal issues if you post derogatory content about your soon-to-be ex-spouse. Your online posts are visible to everyone, including the people representing your spouse in the divorce.

Sharing damaging information, photos or rumors about your spouse can significantly impact divorce negotiations. They can also influence child custody arrangements and have other long-lasting consequences. This is why it is crucial to exercise caution and restraint when posting on social media.

Consider taking a social media break during divorce proceedings

Taking a social media break during your divorce proceedings is a good idea. By doing so, you can safeguard yourself from posting any content that could be incriminating. This will also help you resist the urge to check up on your spouse online and possibly discover something that may be emotionally damaging to your psyche.

You may also want to encourage your friends and family to avoid posting anything negative about your spouse during your divorce. All that does is fuel the fire and it can ultimately hurt you in the end. The best thing to do may be to unfriend your spouse and suggest to your friends that they do the same.

Should you choose to remain on social media during the divorce, keep a low profile. Remember the following guidelines concerning posting on social media before a divorce:

  • Avoid sharing any confidential or sensitive information that you want to keep private from others in your life.
  • Do not post any critiques regarding your relationship.
  • Refrain from discussing specifics about personal relationships.

Besides being used as evidence against you, the things you post may end up hurting your children if they see them online. Going through a divorce is difficult for both you and your family. Instead of engaging in social media posts, seek assistance to help you navigate divorce proceedings.
