Divorce requires preparation. Besides preparing financially, you need to be emotionally ready for it. Separating from someone you thought you would spend the rest of your life with comes with its psychological effects.

Here are five tips to emotionally prepare for divorce:

1. Accept your feelings

You will experience different feelings when going through a divorce. You may feel sad, confused, scared, angry and exhausted. It’s normal to have these feelings; don’t beat yourself up. Accept them and acknowledge it might take time before you feel like yourself again.

2. Take a break

You may not function as usual when going through a divorce. You need to take a break to heal and determine a way forward. That’s why it’s recommended for people to inform their employers about their divorce. You can ask for some time off or a reduction in tasks.

3. Focus on your interests

Thinking about your divorce all the time can worsen matters. When you have free time during this period, consider focusing on your interests. Join that dance class you’ve always wished to, take up a painting class, go to the park/parties to make new friends and so on.

4. Have positive thoughts

This may be easier said than done, but it’s possible. The fear of the unknown can be common during divorce. However, you can train yourself to have positive thoughts. When you think about your life after the divorce, view it as the happiest period of your life. You should have reasonable expectations but do not focus heavily on the negative side of divorce.

5. Maintain routines

Try to maintain your routines as much as possible. Maintaining a certain sense of familiarity can reduce confusion

If you are going through a divorce, seek legal guidance to protect your interests and avoid costly mistakes.
